Earworm…

I’ve been listening to a pretty wide variety of music here lately.

My intake of music normally consists of songs that I would like our congregation to learn and sing at Hickory Grove.

Very seldom do I get a new record just to enjoy. However, I came across a record the other day.

The band is called Citizens. They are artists from Mars Hill Church in the Seattle. Go check them out.

It’s different from what I sing and lead but it is fun listening.

This is my favorite song from the album.

 

 

 

I don’t understand some of this artistry. I’m totally not a hipster. But the music is just good.

Great read…

I just finished a great book on marriage. Timothy Keller’s book, The Meaning of Marriage, is a very good and insightful book on marriage. My wife and I read it together and are walking through it with a sweet, young couple who are engaged to be married this summer. It was refreshing to look back into our own marriage of almost 12 years and see God’s hand carry us through. There were hard times and easy times. I am thankful for my lovely wife who seeks the Lord and is very patient. I am probably not the easiest person to try to understand. So regardless of where you are in your marriage or engagement, I recommend this book. You will find great truths that God has put forth in his idea of marriage! Go here and get it!

Worship Recap…

Wonderful services yesterday! One of the things I enjoyed most outside of the sermon was the ordinance of baptism. It was great to see 8 people get baptized. I knew some of the candidates and their stories. That makes that time so special.

As usual, I am thankful for a Bible teaching church. Yesterday’s sermon was right on time for our people, me included.

Worship Recap…

Our Pastor preached out of John again in our year long study of the Gospel of John. He has a certain with words and emotion behind each thought that makes listening and application seem easy. He told a story of a man who was ill. Death was imminent. There was no time for chit chat. Pastor told this man of his sin and his eternity. After some time, this man believed. Pastor didn’t hold any punches; there was no time for that. At this point in our society, there’s no time for water cooler talk. The Gospel changes lives. People need to hear it. People are transformed by the hearing of God’s Word. So, preach the Gospel at all times, and use words every time!

Your body was made to have water. Your soul was made to have God. If your body does not have water, you will die. If your soul does not have God, you will die an eternal death. (paraphrased from yesterday’s sermon John 7:38-39)

Glasses…

About 5 years ago, I decided I needed glasses. I could see ok but not like once before, some time ago.

I didn’t wear those glasses very much. I only wore them pretty much when I went to the movies or when driving at night.

Well, I am just a tad bit older now and my vision is fading. Fortunately I can function just fine without them most of the time.

However, this past Wednesday at rehearsal, I noticed that the words on my safety blanket back screen were awfully blurry.

I decided then that I would wear those glasses on Sunday. I did. I may not anymore… I was hoping that Pastor would not say anything about them.

Well he did. He was only kidding of course, but I quickly realized this is payback for all those names I called those kids in my classes that had glasses.

I have become one of those people. Good thing is, I’m maxed out on “cool” so I can afford to be picked on a little. Kidding…

Anyway, I’m considering using a larger font for my words next Sunday just avoid those glasses…

Let all the pride “Jesus Juking” commence… Go ahead, have fun with it.

A broken arm and the body of Christ…

My oldest, Miles, had a pretty traumatic experience this week. He broke his first bone. I say first because I imagine we will go through this several more times in his life, really 3x because of our other two kiddos. While it was a rough day or so for him, he was really lifted up yesterday. We’ve had phone calls, texts, emails, and all such things from people who just wanted to wish him well. This makes me happy as a dad to see people rally around my boy. He felt so much love and support from our church family. Our Pastor and many of the staff contacted me just to check up on Miles. That goes a long way! Miles goes to our Christian school. There are a ton of kids that go to school there. It is a great school and they do a wonderful job teaching my kids about Jesus while also giving them an outstanding education. After the word spread about Miles, we received phone calls and texts from some parents and the faculty. Miles was blown away that his principal called to check on him. His teacher emailed us to let us know that she was praying for him. The Head of School texted to check up on him. Miles was pretty glad that people cared for him. He took notice. He’s a smart little guy. It really meant a lot to him. I am also blown away that people who had other things to tend to stopped and reached out to him. That’s pretty special. That doesn’t happen everywhere. I’m thankful for the family of faith at Hickory Grove and I’m thankful for the impact of Hickory Grove Christian School on my family. This is a special place. I’m grateful to be a part of it!
